Now that’s a tasty wheat. Bright and sunny smells from a golden, cloudy beer with a giant white head that settles down to a sexy-looking thick foam. Wheat and citrus in the flavors, blended together to make something truly delicious. I’m growing to like more wheats every time I drink them - they just seem to make me smile.

Apparently this is made by Flying Dog as well - I had no idea when I started drinking it. I can’t find it on their website, but the ratebeer.com site generally seems to be pretty good about knowing the correct brewers of beers.

It’s unfortunate, however - the flying dog Pale Ale is a pretty damned good beer - I just drank it a couple of days ago. This one, on the other hand, just isn’t in the same class. It’s still a good-looking beer, but it just misses out in quite a few places of taste. It’s hoppy, yes, but it’s far too fruity for as few hops as there seem to be hanging around there. It’s also a rather astringent beer - leaving a small film in my mouth that’s rather unpleasant. I’m rather unimpressed by this whole thing - I shoulda grabbed something else from the fridge.

This is the last of the Flying Dog beers that came in the sampler. It’s also my favorite one, but it’s been my favorite of their normal offerings for a long time. Pours out a rich mahogany with a small head. Grassy hop smells dominate the nose. Lots of hops in the taste, too, but it’s not overwhelmingly dominating when pared up with the medium malt. This is a well-rounded beer that goes well any time of the day or night and in almost any situation. Great with food, great by itself. Another flying dog and another beer that I feel could just use a little “more.” It’s a beautiful-looking beer. Very very dark with a slight red tint to it. Thin head that quickly runs away. Sweet malt smell with a hint of caramel. More caramel in the taste along with the expected coffee flavor - it’s just that I was expecting something stronger - something darker in flavor to go along with the dark color. Pours out golden and hazy with a small head. Sweet wheat smell with a light citrus smell. Starts out really good - lots of wheat flavor along with banana and lemon - but then it all goes away very quickly. It comes back again after a few seconds, but there’s a period of about 5 seconds there that just don’t taste like very much at all. I just bought the Flying Dog sampler and as it seems the only thing my stomach can really keep down without hurting me today is beer, I’ll be writing quite a few of these up tonight I imagine.

The Tire Bite is a very light-golden colored ale that pours with a large white head that quickly goes away. Lots of sweet malt in the nose, but little else. Lots of hay flavor along with the malt. This one’s not nearly as aggressive as I would have expected from a Flying Dog Ale - it’s a lot more subdued. Leaves the mouth feeling that tannin-like feeling from a strong red wine. Nothing special to see here, move along. Vintage 07. Pours out darker than sin with a thick, coffee-like head. Lots of coffee in the nose along with quite a bit of sweetness. There’s also lots of coffee and chocolate in the taste. I was expecting more hops for an “Imperial” style beer, but it’s pretty good and balanced, especially for such a high-alcohol beer. It could be a little less sweet, but it works well as a good old-fashioned sippin’ beer. Brewed as a tribute to the late Hunter S. Thompson, I’m all for throwing a buck towards the Hunter monument. Much less sweet than many other brown ales I’ve had in the past, this one sits pretty well on the tongue. I’m drinking it from the bottle since I’m not at home and the only option of glassware here is plastic cups - so I’ve no idea what it looks like. Coffee and caramel with a nice balance of hops, the medium mouthfeel fits it very well. The Brooklyn brewery has always been a favorite of mine, partially because when I first started truly getting “into” beer I was living in New York City and this was available everywhere.
