Belgium may be the point of origin of this beer, but it’s a damn pilsner. Not a bad one, per se, but still pilsner-y.  Really, I’d rather have a Beck’s, but Stella seems to be showing up a lot of places these days, so it’s hard to complain. I really do appreciate having something around that’s pretty tasty, but I do wish it’d swing more towards the beers I like more. It’s the same basic flavors as a pilsner - light body, mild-to-medium levels of hops (Saaz, I think) - plus this weird grassy flavor/smell. Interesting, but nothing special. For the price premium, you’re better off just getting something cheaper that’ll end up tasting better. But if it’s the only choice around it’s not that bad.

I drank this one in all of about 5 minutes - it was the first beer I had in an place I’d never been before when I was meeting people I’d either never met or had only met once. Really, the whole purpose was to drink something as quickly as possible in order to get over the normal “being in a new place and meeting new people” vibe. I really should have just gotten something as cheap as possible in such a situation - that’s what I’ll go with next time. Five bucks for a pint of beer on tap - it really should either be something rare and weird or interesting at that point. I blame Siesta Key’s swanky-ness, though cheap beer pitcher prices were totally reasonable (I’ll get to that one next).

  1. I’ll gladly provide beer from the most northern brewery in the world, just email me details on where to ship it.
BTW tell me where the northernmost brewery is, and Ill throw in a surprise…

  2. In the UK they call Stella the “Wifebeater” beer, and is not very well respected there. However in the states it is seen as a “good” beer…funny how that works.

  3. Good work, you should try BRAHMA (Brazilian Beer) since 1887.
    Keep it up.

  4. Hi just a comment from a belgian on stella. It is an ordinary beer for us, and a low priced beer. Imbev the owner is pushing it’s sale outside of belgium as more of a luxury brand. Make no mistake though it is a simple pils (pilsner as you say in german), and a cheap beer.

Interesting project you have, looking forward to seeing you review more belgian beer. You could start with Jupiler, the most popular pils in belgium, which most prefer over Stella.

  6. It’s funny the kind of want-to-be high class characters that insist on drinking this, and other beers. Not because it’s all that good, or they have a taste for beer, but simply because it costs a bit more and it’s “imported”. I’ve never understood it myself.

Just thought I’d ask if you would like to try one of my favorite beers from locally here, Granville Island Cypress Honey Lager. It’s from Vancouver, BC, so It might be unattainable, but you never know.

  7. Stella’s not bad. It’s light enough where prissy girls will drink it, yet it’s not as painfully light as a Corona. Did they serve you in the traditional glass (http://www.harryspub.ca/images/Stella%20Artois%20Chalice.gif)?

So you want all beers to taste like the ones you like? You fail at reviewing.

  9. I applaud you in this goal of yours. I hope you accomplish it.

Another Belgian recommendation and one of my favorites:

    Hoegaarden Grand Cru.
    http://pds.exblog.jp/pds/1/200506/03/05/c0071305_452413.jpg

Stronger than the more widely known Hoegaarden Blanche, this brew was a pleasant surprise to my taste buds when I first tried it in Brussels a few years ago. I’ll leave further judgment to you. It may be hard to get at your local beer store but it should be available as specialty beer at some bars/pubs or in Belgium ;) .

    Cheers.

  10. Hey bud good luck on your noble quest. Give some of the Pennsylvanian microbrews a try if you can get them where you live (ie. Victory, Yuengling, or Yards Brewery beers are best)

  12. Over in the UK this beer is know as wife beater, cos all the drunk inbreds drink loads of it and go home to beat up the wife! Its cheap and strong and gives like the worst hangovers ever! I have even had a hangover before the end of a night out after drinking this before. I don’t know if it is the same strength over in the US as over here, but I avoid it like the plague nowadays. Plus over here it is really gassy and a bit tasteless. Anyway just my 2 cents worth ;) lol

    Comment by Cads — January 8, 2007 @ 6:03 am

  13. You should try out the beer from Aass Brewery here in Drammen, Norway. :) My favorite and from my town. Should be possible to get hold of in the US too.

  14. If you’re looking for good beer than look no further than Polish beer. I’m sure at least some are imported to the US. Try Strong (formerly Warka Strong), sold in golden cans. It’s great, despite having honey included it isn’t too sweet, it’s just right. Other beers I can recommend are the original Warka (red can), Lech (green can), Żywiec (white can with red and golden ornaments), Dębowe Mocne (black can, strong and tasty). I’m sure there’s also EB (Elbrewery), they only produce it for export (at least they used to) to Canada and the US.

This is a fun experiment, keep the beers coming, I’ll be reading this blog.

  17. I find Stella undrinkable. I find it finishes with an ashtray aftertaste, just like Peroni’s Nastro Azzuro. How it ever beat out Jupiler to be Belgium’s stock representative beer here in the US, I’ll never understand.

  18. Your story just made it on Digg! Congrats! and best of luck to you in trying 365 beers! If I may make a suggestion, try Yuengling, if you haven’t already. It’s a great tasting ale with a smooth finish, a good daily or meal beer. Good luck!!

  19. Only a 3.5 and Becks gets a 4.5? Hmm, I have to disagree with your voting there.. Stella for me has the perfect taste/freshness/blend of a lager, and my preferred choice out of all lagers, where Becks seems very mild/tasteless :(

They call Stella “Wife Beater” here in the UK, being one of the strongest lagers, but I have to admit I have never beat my wife before/during/after drinking Stella.

  21. With a long list ahead of you, let me offer some suggestions. Finding these beers might be a little hard depending on the selection at your liqour store. The majority of these are Canadian, because that’s what I know.

    - Sleeman Honey Brown, Amber Ale or Dark (3 of my favorites)
    - Maverick Supreme Lager (Local, near impossible to find)
    - Kokanee Gold
    - Richard’s Red
    - Big Rock Traditional Ale or Grasshopper (with a slice of leamon)
    - Killkanney
    - Guinness
    - Kronenboug 1664
    - Anything from Yukon Brewking Company (Midnight Sun Espresso Stout is a great one!)
    - Anything from Granville Island Breweries (Gastown Amber Ale and Kitsilano Maple Cream Ale are my favorites)
    - A. Le Coq Premium (made by some Estonian Brewery?)

A short list for now. You’ve inspired me with this idea here. I might have to try something similar.

  22. You should come to belgium and try palm, maes, duvel, hoegaerden and leffe, much better bears …
you didn’t think we’d give the best stuff to you americans ;)
you should certainly try to find westvleteren, it was named best beer in the world, but I don’t think you’ll find it in the US … (especially if you think 5$ is alot for a pint :) )
it’s brewed by munks, and you can only drink it in the bar of the village or buy maximum one (1!) crate with 24 of them.

  23. You must get “Natch” By “Gaymers Cider”, That is a quality pint of cider from the westest of west country.

  24. Stella is known in the UK as “the old wife beater”, due to it’s reputation for causing violent tendencies when consumed in large quantities. I find it very sweet, and overly sickly.

This is a great idea for a blog, I’ll definitely be returning to catch up on your beer adventures.

    Comment by Joe — January 8, 2007 @ 6:25 am

  25. Well, we all ought to remember that although beers may come from outside US (or any country) sometimes they are produced in house (in USA), which might actually change the taste of the beer. It would be good to know where the beer was made if you can find out.

As suggestions, I would like to see if you can taste these beers. They are all made in Dominican Republic, one of them was ranked as the 3rd best beer in the world a while ago, dunno if it still is but it is certainly a very good beer:

  27. Nice blog idea.

Stella’s called ‘wife beater’ over here in UK. Probably a national favourite =D

Nice beer too, personal rating of 4.5 =P

    Comment by Matt — January 8, 2007 @ 6:28 am

  28. Well, that’s the problem you have with drinking beer from somewhere else. If I get a Stella here in Belgium it’s probably the same price as your normal beers (it’s arround 1-2$ here). If I want to try something else, like a Corona it’s also 5$ here.

On the other hand you should really try a Duvel (also a Belgian beer) more info on www.duvel.be :)

    Comment by Steve — January 8, 2007 @ 6:31 am

  29. Stella a Pilsener? That’s a new one. How many Pilseners have you tried? From my experience Stella is much more malty. I love this beer to death despite the fact that it skunks very easily. Damn green bottles.

    Comment by Brian — January 8, 2007 @ 6:32 am

  30. Stella’s really only ever worth it on tap. In the bottle it goes from being a pretty decent light beer to overhopped swill.

    Comment by Colin — January 8, 2007 @ 6:32 am

  31. Only problem with Stella is that after a few pints it makes your tongue go all funny, that coupled with the fact it smells like chemicals!

    Comment by Paul — January 8, 2007 @ 6:38 am

  32. If you’re not impressed by belgian beer yet you should try something else. Gouden Carolus (a good beer only brew in Mechelen), Duvel, Leffe, La Chouffe, …
These are beers with more flavor and more alcohol :) .
Btw it works the other way arround as well, if I want to buy an american beer in Belgium it will cost me about 5$.

You have to try the portuguese beauty (also a normal pils) “Super Bock” mummmm…

    Comment by jorge — January 8, 2007 @ 7:21 am

  44. You shouldn’t give beer a lower rating just because it’s more expensive. Ofcourse imported beers are going to cost more then home brewed. I’m from Belgium, and around here a Stella costs me about 1 euro. And that’s a good price for a pilsner.

And if you want to taste some real Belgium beers, you should go for Duvel or Chimey.

  46. bleugh! :( i really hate stella. it’s called “wife beater” in the UK as it gives you a really nasty headache and makes people violent. i would suggest (if you can find them):

    Comment by Londoner — January 8, 2007 @ 7:36 am

  48. $5 for a pint of Stella is quite reasonable. I’ve only seen it less than that when it was on special (and I’ve seen it as high as $7/pint). If you’re going to try 365 beers and you have a problem with $5/pint, I don’t see this going well…

    Comment by kingturd — January 8, 2007 @ 7:41 am

  49. Well,
This is one hell of a quest :) . Good to hear you’ve tried some Belgian beer, although Stella is not the best beer here, it still is a very good beer on a hot day, and you’re dying for large pint to chug down.

Beers I would recommend you drink are (and not in any particular order)
    - Jupiler
    - Duvel
    - Kriek (Lindemans)
    - Trapist
    - Westmalle
    - Hoogaarden

The first 3 are my personal favorites. Duvel being the strongest, with a distinct yeasty flavor. But after the first 2 sips, it’s a very tasty beer (Don’t drink too fast though :) )

Again, all beers listed above are Belgian.
Oh, and $5 for a Stella.. damn!

    Cheers,
and good luck on your quest.

  56. In Belgium, Stella is treated like Bud in the US. It is the cheap everyday beer. In the UK, it is marketed as “reassuringly expensive”. Though that doesn’t make it taste any better. If you’ve never had them before, try a Belgian Trappist Ale. They are very heavy (9 percent alcohol) but very nice on a cool day (Orval, West Malle, Rochefort, Chimey etc.).

  58. Stella or wife beater as it’s commonly named in england is a definitive pint - its popular and it’s nice. Be warned however, In England the reputation that follows this stuff is one along the lines of it definately being full of crazy chemicals that makes you go mental. here in the Uk, it (along with Foster’s) tends to be the most available lager to drinkers. It is particularly known to cause fights. 8 pints of this and your definately cooked. My mother’s cousin can drink 11 pints of this stuff and survive - a stunning acheivement, then again he is about 6ft 9″ and relatively large built. £2.50 (or five bucks as you say) really isnt that expensive for Stella. Back in England its likely that you can pay anything from £2 to £4.50 (mostly down in london at the higher end of the spectrum) for a pint (thats approximately $4-9). But again they do market this as being “reassuringly expensive”.

it’s a good beer, just avoid too much of it.

  66. Someone who really prefers the “taste” (or absence thereof) of Becks over Stella? heh.

Becks is German for ‘if the US market wants swill, swill we Fair enough, but do remember that Stella is more than simply a reasonable attempt at a Pils.

Stella (certainly in the UK, not so much here in the US) is many people’s first exposure to ‘premium’ beer. It is one of the few ‘average’ beers that crowd for bar space among the Budwiser, Carling, Carlsberg, Fosters, etc.

Stella is a sign, a symbol for those who don’t accept the watered-down piss brews served in many bars in the UK (and seem to be the only damn thing you can order here in the US, where ‘imported’ simply means you get a choice of Mexican watery-piss beer too). It’ll be those who try and enjoy their first Stella who venture forth to try other European lagers, the Warsteiner, Krombacher and Weltins of this world.

Sure, Stella isn’t the world’s greatest beer, it is however to be praised for it dominating prescence admist all the crap and for giving brave adventurous souls their first hint of what proper beer tastes like.

  68. Hey there, I don’t drink beer, but I dig (and digg) your site! Keep it going, this is interesting and fun to watch. You know you are going to piss people off, but this is your site to give your opinion. keep up the good work and make sure you start telling these bartenders what you are doing. A lot of them will give you your order, but then slide you their favorite (unique) beer on the house!!!! Print out some cheap cards at Kinko’s or office max and leave them with the barkeep in case they come across any good local brewery’s. You will also get great drinking stories from them that you can share with the rest of us.

  69. i really dig stella. i live in south texas and at my local bar it out sells bud light (which is the top domestic here) 3 kegs to 1. now, i have had better beers, but i think stella deserves a little more credit. a few good ones to try on hot days are negro modelo and indio, both mexican darks and both are good.
