Thanks again
Really, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who’s stopped by today. I’m more than overwhelmed by the response - and generally it seems like most people think this is a good idea. Now I can’t just weasel my way out of this resolution like I could if this were limited to only people I actually knew.
I still haven’t had time to really go through all of the comments and I won’t really get a chance tonight because of the game, but I really do appreciate all of the recommendations for beer. What’s going to be the problem with all of that is that I live in Florida. I’ve lived in New York City and San Francisco and I’ve visited Madison, WI and Portland, OR - and I was insanely jealous of the beer selections in all of those cities. Sarasota is really lucky to have The Cock and Bull Pub, which really does have one of Florida’s best beer selections under one roof. We also have The Sarasota Brewing Company which is a pretty nice brewpub that brews up about a dozen beers within the course of a year. Unfortunately, both of those places are a good 20-30 minutes away from where I live - and after drinking two beers or so at either of those places you’d end up over the (crazy low) legal limit. So I’ll probably end up doing a very significant portion of the drinking at home - and there’s where the problem lies. Though things have gotten better in the past 3-4 years, Sarasota’s store beer selection is pretty piss-poor. There is a large store up in Tampa that has probably 200 or so beers by the bottle and I’ll be taking advantage of that as much as possible, but I’m pretty sure I’ll still end up short. So I’ll have to travel to pick up new beers - I know, it’s really a tough job I’ve got coming up for me. So yes, I’m sure that you could easily do this challenge in 3 months or less - but I can’t, really. There’s no real way to get a good feel for a beer after you’ve already had 3 different ones that night, so doing it one or two a day is the only reasonable way of going about it I believe.
So that’s the plan. 365 different beers this year - logged and recorded. I’ll start linking to the Ratebeer pages for all of the beers so y’all can easily get to more information on them, but there’s no real overall theme or grouping. Beers will be added due to availability, really - whenever I find something new is when I’m going to end up drinking it. I wish I could do a “west coast Pale Ale” month, or a stout month or something like that, but the reality of the situation is that it’s not going to happen. There will be a very large range of beers involved in this, from malt liquors and the cheapest swill to Belgians and limited edition beers - and once I can get my hands on this year’s Sierra Nevada Bigfoot I’m going to drink 4 or 5 of those, ranging from the 2000 year onwards (I’ve got a few of each year except 2004).
Some people have wondered why I’m doing this, especially after I posted “I’ve gotten lazy in the past few years and have quit trying to enjoy beer for what it is.” Really, that’s the reason why. If you look down one day and see a fat belly, do you just accept it and keep going, or do you go out and try to better yourself? That’s really what I’m going for here - just trying to better myself, beer-wise (though it may not be the best thing for the belly, I have to admit). I used to delight in finding new beers to try. I’d search them out and drink whatever I could find that I had never had. Truth be told, in my life I’ve probably had 365 different types of beer, but this is just a challenge to try them all in a close enough time to really learn a lot about it. I’m not trying to be a beer snob, but I just want to try everything I can out there. If you can do better, good for you - go ahead and write about it. Portland does have great beer. It is the one highlight of living here! This is a great idea. In fact I think it might just be one of the most inspired ideas I have heard of in a looong time. I am linking you and I will be following this! Please don’t hate me cause I like Bass!

One beer you really should try to get hold of is this one. Either you like it very much or you don’t but it is really an experience.
Good luck with your blog and beer drinking.

yuengling, that’s all i gotta say. lager, porter, or black and tan. america’s oldest brewery, pottsville pa.
ok, ok, i’ll also second tom’s BBC steel rail suggestion; i used to drink it by the growler. also in the western massachusetts area, paper city brewery.

I second the other comment about Hoegaarden, and also highly recommend Erdinger Weisbeer. Lived in Germany for 3 years and tried hundreds of different beers there, but Erdinger’s my favorite.

Great new years resolution! Hoegaarden is a must, as most people have recommended! I would also try Kronenburg, also a personal favorite! Good luck with the beer drinking.

Back in college, my friends and I did beer of the week. Needless to say I was very sad when it all came to an end. A few of our favorites were from Austin micro-brews. I suggest giving Real Ale’s Fireman’s #4, Fat Tire, and Live Oak a shot. Anyway, keep up the good work.

You might want to join a beer of the month club. Or maybe a few.

Good luck mate - this is a more hardcore version of the pints challenge we did at uni! (1 pint of everything the bar served in one night!!!) You should try and sort something out so that people can donate (or post) beers from around the world to you (though I am not sure what US import laws on food are like). Here are some reccomendations:
Speights (New Zealand)
Leffe (German I think?)
Green King IPA (English)

I have spent a lot of time in Englewood Fl. I was really excited to find your site on Digg. If there is anything I can do to help you along your way please let me know. I currently live outside of NYC and have family outside of Philadelphia. I would be more than happy to send a warm six pack your way! Keep up the good work! Include Victory’s Hop Devil on your list. It is some delicious stuff.

Good to see another Floridian that loves the beer! I’m originally from Vermont and enjoy the microbrews. I now live in Melbourne, FL. If you’re ever out on this side of the state, there are some good places to hit up. Meg O’Malley’s (Irish Pub) Just got in the Sammy Adams! Also, Tapp’s has a great selection of exotics and domestics (Tucher being one of my favs-German Wiess Beir).
Well good luck in this new year’s resolution! BTW I’m also Mid-20’s and it’s good to see another person screwing the hulk of a body image that seems to be present down here

I recommend you try some Korean beers for when you need something to try. Hite, OB Lager, Cass, Cafri are all pretty good. Hite’s my favorite. You might be able to get them at some of the Korean markets in Panama City or elsewhere. Otherwise, you could just order them via internet. They aren’t too expensive usually.
