One of the better things to happen to Sarasota’s beer community in the past couple of years was when we got a Whole Foods Market in town. Even better - a friend of mine who really enjoys his beer managed to snag the job as the beer purchaser for the place. So for quite a long while it had the best beer selection around - apparently when they came in they brought some of their swanky distribution channels along with them. It was really nice seeing beers that I had never seen in Florida showing up on the shelves left and right. All of a sudden there were beers from three or so breweries around that were completely new to the area. It was lovely.

One of the best parts of this new distribution network was easy access to Eye of the Hawk. This ale is surprisingly strong compared to the taste. Generally higher-alcohol beers end up being very heavy in order to mask the alcohol taste but this one’s not that bad. A nice hop profile and quite a bit of sweetness with some light carbonation. A good drinking buddy is a great find in this world - one that’ll get involved in your schemes cooked up late at night after sharing a 12-pack is a rarity and one that you should try to keep around. Plus, once you’ve been drinking with someone for long enough there’s not really much they can say that’s going to shock or horrify you.

My best friend/drinking buddy came into town this week on a job assignment, so he swung by and picked me up to go down to the Old Salty Dog. The Dog was a very popular place back in college because you can actually sail from the college over there, drink and eat and then sucker someone into taking you home because trying to sail back after a few pitchers would be a terrible idea. Or so I hear. Plus they’ve got a quarter-pound deep-fried hot dog - and that’s just delicious.

So we went down to the dog and had a pitcher of the Winter Lager. And it was nice - catching up with a friend (and his current work associate) while eating some fried food, watching the sun go down over the water and drinking some pretty tasty beer. Again, this was a rare chilly night here in Sarasota so the extra flavor of the beer really shone through - Chris was very adament about a berry flavor while I got so involved in trying to smell it I managed to snort some up my nose. Good times all around. 60 degree weather on the water with friends and a cold beer. Not much more you could want in the world than that.

I wish it were never summer at this point. Here in Florida it’s been far too hot for far too long. At the beginning of this week it broke 80 degrees outside. That’s just not okay - the roommate and I are still running our air conditioning. One of the things you always look forward to in Florida is the short winter where you can still walk around outside in short sleeves and pants and have it feel like fall in other places. Not so this year. It’s started to cool down towards the end of this week but it’s still far too hot outside. I just want to be able to wear a sweater - is that too much to ask?

Because of this unseasonable weather I’ve put off drinking some of the Christmas/Winter beers that I’ve picked up over the past month or so. I figured I might as well break into some of them for this blog or I might miss whatever “winter” we’re going to have here completely. This was a great beer for just sitting around and talking to friends at home. Strongly hopped and full-flavored, I managed to drink this one the night it got down to 60 degrees F here. I’m already missing those days.
