Eye of the Hawk Select Ale

Brewery: Mendocino Brewing Company
Beer: Eye of the Hawk Select Ale
Location: Home

One of the better things to happen to Sarasota’s beer community in the past couple of years was when we got a Whole Foods Market in town. Even better - a friend of mine who really enjoys his beer managed to snag the job as the beer purchaser for the place. So for quite a long while it had the best beer selection around - apparently when they came in they brought some of their swanky distribution channels along with them. It was really nice seeing beers that I had never seen in Florida showing up on the shelves left and right. All of a sudden there were beers from three or so breweries around that were completely new to the area. It was lovely.
One of the best parts of this new distribution network was easy access to Eye of the Hawk. This ale is surprisingly strong compared to the taste. Generally higher-alcohol beers end up being very heavy in order to mask the alcohol taste but this one’s not that bad. A nice hop profile and quite a bit of sweetness with some light carbonation. I approve.

Yeah, cool stuff, that. I’ve got half a case of aged Eye of the Hawk…gotta be 5 years old…that we pulled from the cellar at our wine/beer shop. Can’t sell it, but it’s damned good. You’d be surprised how well this stuff ages.

I’ll give it a try, then. I always prefer to drink locally, so I really haven’t given any of the California brews any time.

This was one of the beers I began to get regularly when I moved close to a whole foods. That was a fun life…we shopped for food maybe once every 4 or 6 days, beer every other day.
