I’m kind of a Grinch - after about 12 years old I started to really lose interest in Christmas. Every year since then I’ve cared less and less. I think it’s just a failing in me somewhere - I can’t really get up the energy to care enough. I like the idea of Christmas, but the execution is what kills me every time.

There’s one really good part of the season, though, and that’s the release of all the Christmas beers. The one I look forward to the most is Sierra Nevada’s Celebration Ale. It’s a delicious beer and perfect for the colder weather. Plus, it’s high-enough in alcohol to help cut the pain of dealing with the holidays. Lots of hops, lots of malt and lots of flavor. It pours out with a very nice head that lasts quite a while over top of a beautiful orange-brown body. The smell is much like other SN beers - I imagine this shares many of the same hops with their Pale Ale. Lots of spiciness as well. I wish this were available all year-round - it would probably be a regular “go-to” beer for me. Also - as of this year it’s made it’s way to Sarasota on tap in a couple of places, which is more than I ever would have imagined.

  1. I had this ale last year (the 2005 brew) and I have to say it was by far one of the strongest, bitter tasting, and in my opinion worst tasting beers to ever grace my lips. Though it does have a “classic” SN taste. Now I am not one to frown on bold tasting beers (one of my favorites is Anchor Old Foghorn) but this was an overload for me. This beer tasted like a light version of their barleywine “Bigfoot Ale”. Come to think of it I may still have four of these in the back of my fridge…

  2. Best beer ever made!! I have brewed some aggressive beers with this kind of beer in mind and came up with nothing near the balance of this iconic flavor. Check out Stone Breweries and thier “Arrogant Bastard Ale” and their Indian Pale Ale They push Hop Heds to their limit. The Smoked Porter is probably the finest beer I have ever tasted. Let me know if you can’t find it, I’ll send it out.
