One of the better things to happen to Sarasota’s beer community in the past couple of years was when we got a Whole Foods Market in town. Even better - a friend of mine who really enjoys his beer managed to snag the job as the beer purchaser for the place. So for quite a long while it had the best beer selection around - apparently when they came in they brought some of their swanky distribution channels along with them. It was really nice seeing beers that I had never seen in Florida showing up on the shelves left and right. All of a sudden there were beers from three or so breweries around that were completely new to the area. It was lovely.

One of the best parts of this new distribution network was easy access to Eye of the Hawk. This ale is surprisingly strong compared to the taste. My best friend/drinking buddy came into town this week on a job assignment, so he swung by and picked me up to go down to the Old Salty Dog. I wish it were never summer at this point. Here in Florida it’s been far too hot for far too long. At the beginning of this week it broke 80 degrees outside. That’s just not okay - the roommate and I are still running our air conditioning. One of the things you always look forward to in Florida is the short winter where you can still walk around outside in short sleeves and pants and have it feel like fall in other places. Not so this year. It’s started to cool down towards the end of this week but it’s still far too hot outside. I just want to be able to wear a sweater - is that too much to ask?

Because of this unseasonable weather I’ve put off drinking some of the Christmas/Winter beers that I’ve picked up over the past month or so. I really don’t have much to say about this beer - I mean, I like it. It’s not a bad beer and when it’s the best option on tap it’s the best option on tap. I’m not going to go out of my way in life to seek out the world’s greatest Harp, but it is pretty tasty overall. I certainly like it a hell of a lot more than Bass - which is nice because they’re often served on tap at the same sort of places. And it does make a tasty black and tan. (edit - while I know the traditional B&T is Guinness and Bass, it does tend to depend on the bar you go to. See here) It has a better mouthfeel than Bass and a much better aftertaste. Perhaps it’s just a little lighter overall and that’s why I like it - but I really do believe it’s something in the aftertaste. Good job, Harp. It happens to everyone - you get a phone call from an acquaintance on Friday afternoon, asking you to come out to a bar and hang out. Even though you’ve never been there you figure it’ll be a good time - talk to some people, shoot some pool, hang out for a bit after a long week. Everyone enjoys hanging out at a bar, right? All seems good as you walk up to the door - there’s some music playing, the parking lot’s half full and all seems right with the world. Until you walk in and see that it’s a dreaded “three tap bar.” That’s right, three taps - Budweiser, Bud Light and “other.” A very significant part of the time it ends up that the “other beer” is this one - Miller Lite. And really, it’s better than the other two choices. It’s not terribly offensive and actually has a (very slight) flavor to it, plus not much in the way of an aftertaste. Really, if you’re just going to sit around and drink for a long time, this is probably the best way to do it - go ahead and order yourself a couple of nice beers at first, but after the first two or three “high-class” beers it begins to be silly to continue drinking it. At that point it’s really quantity over quality. Obviously if you can go ahead and get something better than do it, but if you’re stuck in a dive bar and need a drink - this is much better than the alternative.

Really, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who’s stopped by today. I’m more than overwhelmed by the response - and generally it seems like most people think this is a good idea. I still haven’t had time to really go through all of the comments and I won’t really get a chance tonight because of the game, but I really do appreciate all of the recommendations for beer. What’s going to be the problem with all of that is that I live in Florida. I’ve lived in New York City and San Francisco and I’ve visited Madison, WI and Portland, OR - and I was insanely jealous of the beer selections in all of those cities. Sarasota is really lucky to have The Cock and Bull Pub, which really does have one of Florida’s best beer selections under one roof. We also have The Sarasota Brewing Company which is a pretty nice brewpub that brews up about a dozen beers within the course of a year. Unfortunately, both of those places are a good 20-30 minutes away from where I live - and after drinking two beers or so at either of those places you’d end up over the (crazy low) legal limit. So I’ll probably end up doing a very significant portion of the drinking at home - and there’s where the problem lies. Though things have gotten better in the past 3-4 years, Sarasota’s store beer selection is pretty piss-poor. There is a large store up in Tampa that has probably 200 or so beers by the bottle and I’ll be taking advantage of that as much as possible, but I’m pretty sure I’ll still end up short. So I’ll have to travel to pick up new beers - I know, it’s really a tough job I’ve got coming up for me. So yes, I’m sure that you could easily do this challenge in 3 months or less - but I can’t, really. There’s no real way to get a good feel for a beer after you’ve already had 3 different ones that night, so doing it one or two a day is the only reasonable way of going about it I believe.

So that’s the plan. 365 different beers this year - logged and recorded. I’ll start linking to the Ratebeer pages for all of the beers so y’all can easily get to more information on them, but there’s no real overall theme or grouping. Beers will be added due to availability, really - whenever I find something new is when I’m going to end up drinking it. I wish I could do a “west coast Pale Ale” month, or a stout month or something like that, but the reality of the situation is that it’s not going to happen. There will be a very large range of beers involved in this, from malt liquors and the cheapest swill to Belgians and limited edition beers - and once I can get my hands on this year’s Sierra Nevada Bigfoot I’m going to drink 4 or 5 of those, ranging from the 2000 year onwards (I’ve got a few of each year except 2004).

Some people have wondered why I’m doing this, especially after I posted “I’ve gotten lazy in the past few years and have quit trying to enjoy beer for what it is.” Really, that’s the reason why. If you look down one day and see a fat belly, do you just accept it and keep going, or do you go out and try to better yourself? That’s really what I’m going for here - just trying to better myself, beer-wise (though it may not be the best thing for the belly, I have to admit). I used to delight in finding new beers to try. I’d search them out and drink whatever I could find that I had never had. Truth be told, in my life I’ve probably had 365 different types of beer, but this is just a challenge to try them all in a close enough time to really learn a lot about it. I’m not trying to be a beer snob, but I just want to try everything I can out there. If you can do better, good for you - go ahead and write about it.
