I’ll just say that this was a good weekend for drinking beer, even though I didn’t write about them until later.

Mr. Bones is a unique BBQ joint on Anna Maria Island here in Florida. Amazing BBQ ribs (get the spicy BBQ), plus a myriad of other dishes including some damn fine Indian offerings and tasty vegetarian fare. The most interesting part of the whole place is right in front - they have an old-style coffin stocked with 35-40 different types of bottled beers. While you’re standing around in the (tiny) waiting area for a table to open up you can just grab yourself a beer, pop the top and start drinking. Beats having to belly up to a bar and chat with anyone, plus you get plenty of time and space to look for a hidden gem you might not have had before. This was great for me while working on this beer quest I have to say.

Horray Beer! - and I agree. Just not so much Horray Red Stripe. Not to say it’s undrinkable - that’s far from the truth. It’s just that there are much better beers out there that you could be drinking instead. I’m not too suprised that something like this would be popular down in the islands - it’s light, it’s easy-drinking and it comes in a tiny little brown bottle that seems to fit the island “idea.” Lots of carbonation in the bottle I had, and it was very smooth but it just didn’t have much real “beer” flavor - though there’s definitely some sweetness involved. I’ve never gone ga-ga for this beer like some people I know, but I could see drinking it again - and again, and again - as long as there was nothing else better available. It’d be easy enough to go through a 6-pack on a hot day in the sun.
