Looks like malt liquor and tastes a whole hell of a lot like it as well. Sweet malt in the nose with very little head along with mostly sweet malt flavor with some hay and some odd green flavor that I can’t quite place. Canadian beer is better? I didn’t really know what to expect from a “real ale.” For some reason my guess was that it was going to be a pale ale or an IPA. I was quite wrong. Apparently it’s a brown ale, and those haven’t ever been favorites of mine. Not that I dislike them like some other styles, but I can really just take or leave them. So I was somewhat disappointed when the beer started pouring out as darkly as it did. It’s a very dark red with a medium-brown lace for a head. Smells of coffee. It’s a more balanced brown than I’ve had at other points - it’s not beating me over the head with sweetness, at least. There’s a nice balance between the major flavors in this beer, but it ends up a little too watery at the end for my taste. Pours out looking like an American domestic, but doesn’t really taste much like one. Slight wheat notes in the smell coming off the lasting, white head. Some amounts of honey along with the wheat in the taste, plus some small balancing hops. I didn’t like the first one of these I had a few days ago at a poker game, but it’s grown on me some since then. It’s a little too sweet for my tastes and needs more - just more of everything except for the sweetness, I think. More wheat and more citrus, mainly.
