I didn’t really know what to expect from a “real ale.” For some reason my guess was that it was going to be a pale ale or an IPA. I was quite wrong. Apparently it’s a brown ale, and those haven’t ever been favorites of mine. Not that I dislike them like some other styles, but I can really just take or leave them. So I was somewhat disappointed when the beer started pouring out as darkly as it did. It’s a very dark red with a medium-brown lace for a head. Smells of coffee. It’s a more balanced brown than I’ve had at other points - it’s not beating me over the head with sweetness, at least. There’s a nice balance between the major flavors in this beer, but it ends up a little too watery at the end for my taste.
