Man, that’s nasty. There’s just so much fruit flavor here that it overwhelms the slight wheat beer taste that’s in the background. From the initial sniff to the final aftertaste, 95% of what you taste in this beer is the cherry flavoring, and that’s just far too much for a style like this. If I wanted some cherry flavor in my malt beverage I’d buy whatever crap Smirnoff Ice was selling these days. Nice light golden color and a small, white head make for a nice-looking beer, but once you taste it that all goes down the toilet. This isn’t a beer, it’s a cherry soda with a slight beer flavoring added.

Slightly hazy blond/gold color with very little head. It’s got a sweet aroma with little in the way of hops. More sweetness throughout the taste with some apricot and some other flavor I just can’t place. Could be stronger, I think - needs a little more kick in the flavor. Crisp with a light mouthfeel. Pretty average.

I know a lot of people that are in love with this beer - to them, it’s the end all and be all of drinking. And it’s pretty tasty - lots of good wheat beer flavor, light on the hops and with lots of citrus character (though I can’t say exactly how much was in this pint from the tap as the bartender dropped an orange slice into the beer before handing it to me). It’s an easy-drinking wheat and I really can’t knock it that much. But after years of drinking heavy, complex American micros I think I’ve shoved myself more towards that style of beer - the over-the-top, smack-in-the-face beers are the ones that truly stand out for me (Becks notwithstanding). Though truth be told I can already see my tastes in beer changing since I started this experiment - a couple of months ago I would have taken my first sip of this and just given it to someone else. I’m definitely noticing a lot more flavor and depth in the beers I’ve been drinking lately, which was the whole point all along. I’ll probably write more about this once I hit 50.

I also wanted to thank all of y’all who’ve given me some suggestions for beers to check out - especially those of you who’ve pointed out ones along the East Coast. The trip’s not finalized yet, but it’ll be from the middle of Florida up 95 to Maine - where we’ll eat a lobster and then start back south, probably by way of Buffalo and maybe Ohio. Keep ‘em coming in - I’ve got a list here that I’ll be sure to check the next time I stop by the good liquor store. I’ll also be over in Louisiana this weekend - if there are other beers besides the ones from Abita that are made around those parts let me know and I’ll pick some up while I’m there.

Instead of eating a healthy meal after going to the gym, drink a beer. It’s pretty much the worst thing you can immediately put into your body after working out - thusly nullifying all of the good deeds you’ve worked so hard on beforehand. If I were really brilliant I’d go and chain-smoke a couple of cigarettes, too. But hey, this should be enough to take care of the anti-healthy for the day. Wouldn’t want to get too fit too fast - that’d be horrible.

Apparently this style of beer is known as a Vienna - due to the fact that it was developed near Vienna, Austria. Not that original, really. It’s got quite a lot of fruity character to it, which is always odd in a lager. There’s almost a slight pineapple taste as well. The head’s gone after just a couple of minutes in the glass, too. It does have a nice medium-golden color to it that’s very slightly cloudy, but not that much in the way of bitterness. Seems like there’s a little bit of caramel flavor to it as well. This was another one of the beers I picked up when I drove back from Maryland - not my favorite of the bunch, but pretty reasonable. I could drink a few of these and be pretty happy with it for a night, though I don’t know that I’d buy it again in light of the rest of the beers I bought on the same trip.

This is really my daily drinker beer these days - the one I always turn to when I just want to have a beer or three without being suprised by anything new. It’s refreshing with a light body and a medium amount of bitterness. Really, it’s a nearly perfect Florida beer. It’s complex enough to be enjoyable without being complex to show off. Really, one of the goals of this whole project is to stop drinking Beck’s all the time - not really because I’m tired of it but just because I’m afraid I’ll never try anything else because I like this one so much. So we’ll see how it goes.

I didn’t even really want to drink beer this day - it was New Year’s day, I’d had a very late night the night before with not that much sleep afterwards. But there were lots of people over for the USC/Michigan game and everyone else was drinking. So I had to drink a few myself. As always, not a bad beer. Tasty, hit the spot without being obtrusive. Good job Beck’s - I’m sure I’ll drink you again sometime this year when I get tired of “Mike Jones’ Badger and Yak’s Blood Beer” or whatever crazy thing I have to drink to finish this challenge.
