This is a good, solid offering from the boys in Boston. Very dark reddish-brown with a creamy light-brown head. Lots of caramel in the nose. The honey shines through in the taste, but still lots of good porter flavors as well (caramel, chocolate, malt) along with some vanilla. Not very bitter, but very little aftertaste as well. Now that’s one big pilsner. Nice light/medium golden color, nearly no head. Smells of hay and light hopping. Lots of malt flavor - sweet and heavy; much heavier than what you’d expect for a beer that looks like this. Lots of hops throughout, but not overpowering. Sticking my nose right up next to the head of this beer and inhaling deeply brought one immediate thought to my head - pina colada. Why a pale ale is smelling like pina colada, I have no idea - but it was. Now that the head’s gone and I’ve taken a couple of mouthfuls of the beer that smell seems to have disappeared as well. Very odd - I have no idea where that came from.

The beer itself is nice-looking: medium-amber color with a big (colada) head that went away as soon as I started drinking it. Some caramel flavors along with a nice, average amount of hops. It’s a little sweeter than I was expecting when I poured it out - and I’m generally not that much of a fan of the sweeter beers. But this one seems to work pretty well. This ended up being a lot better than I had been expecting - I really thought I was going to just get a slap in the face with a mouth full of elderberries and then want to cry. Luckily it’s not so much the case here.

Nice thick head that ran away quickly over a very dark red beer. Berry scent but it’s not really overpowering in the taste. Good mouthfeel for a dark ale, medium berry flavor and a smoothness from the oats that brings it together nicely. Now this is a wonderful beer. Brownish-orange in color with a light head that goes away quickly, it smells of malt and slightly of oranges. The taste is very balanced between malt and hops with lots of layers of flavor. Sweet malt and some hops quickly move to a mild orange-caramel flavor before the hops come back in the aftertaste. Even after a couple of minutes of taking a sip it’s still filling my mouth with delicious hop flavors and leftovers. Everything is perfectly balanced in this beer, even though it’s a lot higher alcohol than I initially thought - over 7%. Nutty is the first thing I think of when tasting this beer. It’s a very nutty beer. Pours out with a off-white huge head that quickly goes away, sitting on top of a dark, nutty brown. More nuttiness in the smell, along with quite a bit of malt. Sweet nutty malt flavor as well, along with chocolate and caramel to a smaller degree. The hops in this balance the beer out quite well. I wasn’t that big a fan on my first couple of sips but it’s really growing on me while I write this. I’d had this beer sitting in the beer fridge since the Stout Session way back at the beginning of March. I figured that I had to eventually drink it. Glad that I did.

It wasn’t really what I expected. It looked normal enough for a stout - darker than sin, thick dark-brown head that settles down over the course of a couple of minutes. However, it’s a hell of a lot smoother than I was expecting. The past few stouts I’ve had have been much more of the “hit you over the head with roasted flavor” types than this much smoother style - and I have to say that I really do like the smoother ones. It’s something that you can sit around and drink and enjoy without wrinkling up your face at every sip. Not that it’s never a desired sort of feeling - there are times that I’m all for the idea - it’s just that I generally want something I can drink during a poker game or while talking with friends rather than “serious beer drinking.”

It’s smooth and somewhat creamy with small hints of chocolate and coffee from the roasted malts. Very little bitterness and in this particular beer that works really well. Had this one with a bratwurst for dinner and I have to say they’re delicious together. The beer pours out with a giant head that quickly settles down - it’s got a nice amber color to it as well. Smells lightly of hops, but not overpowering. The beer itself is also milder than I had expected - apparently this is an English Pale Ale instead of an American. It’s nicely put together but nothing very special. Medium mouthfeel with a lingering bitterness in the aftertaste. I’d buy it again if I ever had the chance. Sweet malt in the nose with very little head along with mostly sweet malt flavor with some hay and some odd green flavor that I can’t quite place. Canadian beer is better? This one isn’t really showing the power of the maple leaf in any way, shape or form.

I didn’t really know what to expect from a “real ale.” For some reason my guess was that it was going to be a pale ale or an IPA. I was quite wrong. Apparently it’s a brown ale, and those haven’t ever been favorites of mine. Not that I dislike them like some other styles, but I can really just take or leave them. So I was somewhat disappointed when the beer started pouring out as darkly as it did. It’s a very dark red with a medium-brown lace for a head. Smells of coffee. It’s a more balanced brown than I’ve had at other points - it’s not beating me over the head with sweetness, at least. There’s a nice balance between the major flavors in this beer, but it ends up a little too watery at the end for my taste.
