Pours out looking like an American domestic, but doesn’t really taste much like one. Slight wheat notes in the smell coming off the lasting, white head. Some amounts of honey along with the wheat in the taste, plus some small balancing hops. I didn’t like the first one of these I had a few days ago at a poker game, but it’s grown on me some since then. It’s a little too sweet for my tastes and needs more - just more of everything except for the sweetness, I think. More wheat and more citrus, mainly. Drinking this one for the “local beer session” - and I feel bad since I’ve missed the past couple of these. I figured I’d make sure to take part in this Session, even though our local choices are not the greatest in the world. In fact, it’s quite sad down here all together.

Sarasota Brewing Company is the most “local” beer that we have around here, but it’s nothing special. Too many of their beers taste the same. When I was first getting “into beer” I thought it was great that we had a local brewery - and quite a nice one at that. The place itself is great - low, dark bar areas and high-ceilinged dining areas. Great selection of bar foods and they really do it up right when it comes to football season. But I think that somewhere between when I first started going seven years ago or so and now one of two things have happened - they’ve changed how they’re doing thing or I’ve changed my expectations of craft/brewpub beer. I think it’s probably a mixture of the two - friends who used to go years ago and come back tell me that they’re not as happy with the beer these days, either.

As for the beer I drank this time, I went with the Porter because it had been years since I’d tried it. I was hoping that with such a different style of beer that there would be some changes - and I was at least partially correct. I’d say their porter is probably their best “year-round” beer - unfortunately that’s not saying too much. As for the actual tasting notes:

Reddish tinge to this dark porter with no real head to speak of. Sweet malt and alcohol smell. More sweet malt in the taste with lots of chocolate flavors - very light on the hops. Still tastes too much like their other beers for my liking. The brewer needs to branch out with some new flavors - their main one isn’t good enough to carry this place.

I come back for the food more than for the beer these days, and that’s damned sad for my local brewpub. I don’t really mind if a brewery has beers that taste quite a bit alike (see - Sierra Nevada), but in order for it to work well that major flavor needs to be good. This one just isn’t. I like the place a lot, and I wish I still loved it like I did when I was still in college, but the magic just got lost somewhere along the way. But damn if they don’t have the best cheese sticks in the world.

Pours out a nice dark-amber color with a medium-sized white head that sticks around for a couple of minutes before dying off to a thin layer. Smells like butterscotch and caramel. Tastes like them, too, with a nice bitterness that balances the sweetness out nicely. One thing that I’ve gotten from this beer drinking so far is that I like (good) wheat beers a lot more than I ever thought I did. I imagine that many of my problems with wheat beers in the past were just due to drinking bad ones. This particular beer is far from bad. In fact, it’s very, very tasty.

Beautiful golden color with a heavy wheat haze and a small amount of sediment floating in the middle of the glass. Thick white head that quickly falls to a thin one. Slightly sweet nose with a slight flowery sense about it. Drinking it makes me think of sunshine and good times and actually makes me smile. It has less of a citrus flavor than lots of other wheat beers, but it’s still there. Orange and lemon, mostly, with a mild amount of wheat and malt. Maybe it’s just that I’ve been drinking middle-of-the-road beers quite a bit recently, but this one has really made me perk up. The sad thing is, I think it’s more from the lack of a nasty aftertaste than the actual taste of the beer itself. Not to say this isn’t a reasonable American Pale Ale - it is that. It’s just that it’s lacking a lot of the power that I would expect from this style of beer. The flavors are all there - good medium maltiness, hopping that’s reminiscent of the Northwest and a good medium mouthfeel that sits nicely on each sip. There just needs to be more, especially in the hopping. American Pales always push some boundaries in this category, and Casco Bay’s just not doing that here. Here’s a beer that starts out strong but then fizzles out towards the end. It’s really too bad - it’s very tasty at the beginning. Nice nose of fruit and spicy hops, good golden color with a slight reddish tint to it. The initial taste is pretty great as well - lots of hints of fruit flavor from the hops. The problem is that that’s where it ends - after that very initial first taste it just becomes watery with a bad aftertaste. The sweetness lingers too long and isn’t replaced by anything else that works better. It’s too bad - I very much liked the first 2 seconds of each sip. After the first sip I had of this beer I really didn’t like it, but I think it just wasn’t agreeing with what I had for dinner. The following ones got much better.

Hazy dark-golden brown with lots of yeast sediment floating around, it maintains a nice head on top as well. Lots of grassy hops in the nose with a lot of resiny smell as well. Pretty refreshing just from the first sniff. Slightly sweet flavor along with a big face full of hops in the taste - it’s actually very nice, except for the far-too-long-lingering aftertaste that’s very dry and quite unpleasant. If it weren’t for that leftover flavor it would be a much better-rating beer. Man, that’s nasty. There’s just so much fruit flavor here that it overwhelms the slight wheat beer taste that’s in the background. From the initial sniff to the final aftertaste, 95% of what you taste in this beer is the cherry flavoring, and that’s just far too much for a style like this. If I wanted some cherry flavor in my malt beverage I’d buy whatever crap Smirnoff Ice was selling these days. Nice light golden color and a small, white head make for a nice-looking beer, but once you taste it that all goes down the toilet. This isn’t a beer, it’s a cherry soda with a slight beer flavoring added.

Slightly hazy blond/gold color with very little head. It’s got a sweet aroma with little in the way of hops. More sweetness throughout the taste with some apricot and some other flavor I just can’t place. Could be stronger, I think - needs a little more kick in the flavor. Crisp with a light mouthfeel. Pretty average.

I don’t know what it is, but I seem to be picking the sweet beers out of the fridge today for some reason. This one’s pretty good, though. Medium-gold in color with nearly no head to speak of, it smells mostly of malt. It’s crisp on the tongue with flavors of apple and more sweet malt. I think what’s great about this beer is that there’s nothing bad about this beer - no unpleasant aftertastes or smells of regular tastes. Just a plain old-fashioned drinking beer.
